The bi-annual Report on Cancer Statistics in Alberta shows that cancer rates in the Province are dropping.

"We have made significant progress in reducing the burden of cancer in Alberta, and both the instance and mortality of cancer in Alberta have steadily declined," said Dr. Huiming Yang, Medical Director, Screening, Population, Public and Indigenous Health in Calgary.

According to the report which was released today (February 3), cancer mortality rates have dropped by an average of 2.1 per cent annually in Alberta between 2004 and 2014. As well, cancer incidence rates have declined by about 0.6 per cent annually between 2001 and 2014.

Dr. Yang credits strategies put into effect in the province.

"That reflects the fact that we've implemented effective cancer control strategies, including the prevention screening/early detection and treatment strategies in Alberta."
