Rocky View County is no stranger to flooding and now the Government Of Alberta Is hoping to lend a helping hand.

In May, select municipalities around Alberta were notified that there was grant funding available as part of the flood readiness initiative.

Rocky View County was one of the selected communities. The grant is intended to assist municipalities in ensuring that their emergency management program is in a state of readiness in the event of flooding.

The County received ten thousand dollars and Randy Smith from Rocky View County said the grant is used to modernize their equipment.

" We have two emergency management centres here, one in Calgary and one in Balzac. With the grant, we were able to purchase some much-needed equipment to bring our crews together in the event of a flood."

The County used the grant to buy computers, basic stationery and create kits for crews to help complete damage assessments and prevention.

" We were able to put a number of these kits together and now they are sitting there in a state of readiness."

The grant was specifically awarded to the County in case it is impacted by a rain on snow event in the mountains much like the one that struck in 2013.

" We always say an event like the one in 2013 can happen every five years."

The goal is that the next time an event like the flood of 2013 happens the county is fully prepared.
