The 2017 election season is officially underway after candidates for mayor, council and trustee filed their paperwork and formalized their candidacy yesterday (September 18).

Candidates for mayor and council had until noon to file their nomination paperwork yesterday, and have 24 hours to withdraw from the election. As such, the ballot will not be official until noon today (September 19). Even so, the City has released an unofficial list of candidates running for mayor and council.

 Five candidates will contend for the mayor's seat. Marie Lauer, Bernie Biever, Blaine Astra and Fred Burley will challenge incumbent Peter Brown.

The race for council promises to be gripping, with 23 candidates running for the six council seats.

The list of candidates for Rocky View Trustee will also not be official until noon, and the school division has also released an unofficial list on their website.

Airdrie will see a school board election as five candidates plan to vie for one of three Ward 3 seats. Incumbent Todd Brand and new comers Melyssa Bowen, Jim Forrest, Jason Spratt and Pam Thursfield will all try to earn your vote.

Only two other incumbents planned to return to the school board, and both will keep their seats as Ward 4 Trustee Norma Lang and Ward 6 Trustee Fiona Gilbert both were acclaimed.

Chestermere will see an election with two candidates running for Ward 1. Ward 5, which includes Bragg Creek, Springbank and rural Cochrane will also see a three person race. Meanwhile, rural Chestermere has a new trustee after Patricia Sproule won the Ward 2 seat by acclaim.
