At this morning's (March 2) Rocky View School Board Meeting, the board voted to change when English students from AE Bowers enter Muriel Clayton Middle School.

Under the current grade structure, students in the English program at AE Bowers depart the school after grade 5, the same time as their French Immersion counterparts. With this structure, those students arrive at Muriel Clayton one year after their peers from Nose Creek Elementary, who begin at Muriel Clayton after grade 4.

Today's vote changes the structure. Now, AE Bowers' English students graduate to Muriel Clayton after completing grade 4, starting at the middle school at the same time as their peers from Nose Creek. Meanwhile, the French Immersion students remain at the school for an additional year before going to Ecole Airdrie Middle School for grade 6, the same as their peers from Edwards Elementary School.

The motion was brought forward by Trustee Sylvia Eggerer, who expressed some reservations about the motion because it creates a gap for grade 5 students at AE Bowers. Eggerer stated that despite her hesitation, she was bringing the motion forward because something needed to be done, and the motion was carried unanimously. Eggerer made a subsequent motion that the Superintendent bring a review of the process back to the board in early 2018.
