A local six year old made her first real haircut count yesterday (November 2).

Payton Wood had not had a major haircut since she was born, and yesterday she chopped a significant amount of her waist length hair to donate to Angel Hair for Kids after deciding it was getting too long. Jenna Wood, Payton's mom, explained how her daughter got the idea.

"She's had a couple of trims, but she's basically been growing her hair and it honestly kind of started when she wanted to cut her hair and I was trying to get her not to cut it and so I said, 'Well, you know if you grow it long enough, you can donate it for kids that don't have hair,' and she thought that was a great idea and so she's been growing it ever since and looking forward to donating it."

Jenna said they chose Angel Hair for Kids because they wanted to support a Canadian organization with a focus on children. Angel Hair for Kids uses hair donations to make wigs for children.

After finding out a cash donation needed to accompany the hair, Payton decided to donate $5 of her own money and raise funds from family and friends. Payton said she had received donations from her classmates at Heron's Crossing, her grandparents and her parent's coworkers. Jenna said in the last week, they've raised $1500. According to the Angel Hair for Kids website, sponsoring one child through Angel Hair for Kids takes $1000.

Jenna said she was extremely proud of her daughter.

"I think any mom would be pretty proud of a kid doing something like this. I think that being only six years old and willing to give this for another kid is pretty cool."
