Small businesses are showing small signs of confidence in the Alberta economy.

A report released today by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says small business confidence in the province rose four points in January to 47.2 per cent, indicating a modest gain in recent months.  The survey also said fuel and energy is a major constraint to 68 per cent of Alberta businesses.

Linda Bruce, the President of the Airdrie Chamber of Commerce, says the new Alberta carbon tax is affecting every small business in the city and the rest of the province.

"It depends on what kinds of transportation costs they have for their business and just general operating costs because we have to keep the lights and the heat on."

The CFIB survey indicates 30 per cent of businesses say may have to cut back on employees over the next year, but that's down seven points from December. 11 per cent are anticipating hiring staff, compared to only seven per cent the month before.

Bruce says she continues to see a desire for growth from small businesses in Airdrie, with three more opening their doors over the weekend.
