Some of the best law enforcement officers are camping out by the Airdrie Wal-Mart to support Special Olympics athletes.

The annual “Free Our Finest” event kicked off yesterday (August 10th) when the first group was lifted up to a structure by an Airdrie Fire Department truck.

Fundraising co-ordinator for the event Melissa Eye said she’s very excited for this year’s event.

“It’s a lot of fun, it’s great seeing the athletes come out, it’s great to see the smiles on their faces, it’s great to see the coaches come out and help out, it’s great to raise lots of money and interact with the public. It’s just lots of fun.”

Inspector Byron Bjornson of the Alberta Sheriffs is participating this year and explains why law enforcement groups get involved.

“Law enforcement of different agencies, the RCMP, City Police, Alberta Sheriffs, participate in different events to help the awareness to what the Special Olympics are and raise money to support athletes to participate in Special Olympics.”

For Eye, she’s encouraged by the ongoing support from the community year after year.

“The more that we’re more, the more that people are getting to know who we are and what we do. The community has been very supportive of us. The more years that we’re here, the more organizations that want to get involved and participate with us.”

The event will take place until Sunday afternoon at 4 with all donations going to support local Special Olympics athletes.
