Students at R.J. Hawkey were evacuated after a fire alarm was pulled on Thursday, December 8.

Many are now concerned, as the students were forced to wait in the extremely cold weather without jackets.

"We experienced an unexpected evacuation of the school today when one of our pull stations was accidentally triggered. To their credit, students and staff responded extremely well and were very efficient in following the evacuation protocol," said Sue Long, Principal at R.J. Hawkey.

After the scene had been cleared by fire fighters, students were taken back inside.

Parents of the students felt that there should have been a better system in place considering the severe cold weather conditions.

"Why do our schools not have a protocol or alternatives for safety in extreme weather? With a windchill between -25C and -30C depending on your source, our children were at a much greater risk due to the cold than they were due to a possible fire," said Parent Carrie Newman.

We have reached out to the Rocky View School Division and will provide updates as soon as they become available.
