Last week, the Federal Budget was announced but before that, thousands of students across Alberta gave their opinions on what they'd like to see.

The Student Budget Consultations were put on by CIVIX, the organization that also does the Student Vote program at every election.

Students were asked their opinions on a variety of matters including where government spending should be increased and what priorities the government needs to set when it comes to essential services.

One of the students who participated in the consultations is from Meadowbrook School in Airdrie. Elle, a Grade 6 student explains one of the items she wished to see in this year's Federal Budget.

"Reduce the student debt was one of the big ones I thought. I have two older brothers and I know personally they have trouble with that and they also have trouble finding a job. My one [brother] just finished University. I wanted to help people like him in the future after University."

Elle says that she and her classmates agree that Health Care should be the number one priority for the Federal Government while the Environment is second.

That aligns with the results of the Budget Consultations which have has Health Care as the number one priority for the government followed by the environment, the economy, poverty and inequality and unemployment.

Fifty-nine of students surveyed also said lowering the federal debt should be a top priority.

After the budget was presented, Elle says she was overall pleased with what she saw.

"I think there's a lot of good. The parental leave was pretty cool to see on there. I really liked the result of it."
