As the school year draws to a close for many local students, some Grade 8's from Ecole Airdrie are celebrating how they gave back to the community.

Several students took part in the Community Matters program where they found ways to help those in Airdrie both inside and outside the school walls.

Student Maha Dev shares some of the ways his classmates gave back.

"There was a group that did a breakfast program for the school. There was also another group that volunteered at the Food Bank...There was a group that went out to the elementary school over there and helped Grade 1 I think, helped little kids read."

Maha Dev had a project of his own, where he helped replace the basketball nets at his school.

"These hoops are very old and they haven't been changed for a long time. There's a lot of kids that love to play basketball and so do I. I thought it would be a great project to fix the basketball hoops."

With the program expected to run again next year, there's some encouragement for those students considering it.

"You have to be dedicated," said Maha Dev, "you have to have a good schedule, planning. That's definitely something to look out for."
