Whether it's online or in store, it's important to be a savvy Christmas shopper.
Over the holidays there are many ways that you can get that perfect gift and stay safe doing it.
"From pick-pockets in crowded malls to cyber criminals phishing for your information, it's easy for anyone to become a target during the busy holiday shopping season," said Mary O'Sullivan-Andersen, Better Business Bureau (BBB).
When you head to the mall or your favorite local business, keep these tips in mind:
- Do not buy more than you can carry to avoid being targeted for a theft or scam
- Use bags, purses, and backpacks with zippers
- Keep your phone and wallet secure
- Do not take out your credit card or check book until you are asked, so that no one can steal information over your shoulder
- Always put your debit and credit cards back in your wallet
The world of internet retail poses just as many threats, so protect yourself when shopping online:
- Shop on websites that you know and trust
- Look for secure web addresses and legitimate logos
- Contact the business directly
- Do not respond to phishing emails asking for account information or money. When in doubt, contact the business
- Never wire money
- Use updated anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software
With all this in mind, enjoying a safe and happy holiday should be no problem.
