Christmas typically comes with a lot of extra recycling, whether it's boxes your online-ordered packages came in, or the wrapping paper torn off the pile of presents under the tree. The City of Airdrie is reminding Airdrondians that even though there's more to recycle than usual, blue cart ettiquite still applies.

"Our system is automated. Contractors don't get out of trucks to pick up excess cardboard before carts." says the City of Airdrie in a statement, "The lid on your recycling cart needs to close for our system to work effectively."

The City asks that you don't overload the cart or load it with large items that prevent the lid from closing completely. Any excess recycling should be taken to the Airdrie Recycling Depot as drivers will not return to pick up anything left behind.

Post-Christmas recycling pickup will be on the day it normally gets picked up in your neighborhood.

What materials are accepted in the blue cart:

  • Paper - such as newspaper, magazines, envelopes, soft cover books, wrapping paper, paper coffee cups, shredded paper (inside a clear plastic bag)
  • Cardboard - such as boxes, juice boxes, corrugated cardboard
  • Food Containers - such as aluminum cans or foil, jar lids, metal food containers
  • Plastics - such as plastic containers with the recycling symbols 1-7, excluding styrofoam or polystyrene
  • Glass - such as food containers, refundable glass beverage containers
