Very soon, you might be welcoming some new, feathery neighbours to your community as Airdrie’s Backyard Hens project begins soon.

Director of the Pilot Project Gail Gibeau explains how long those hens will be in town.

A hen coop is set up at a house in Ravenswood.

“As of April 30th, participants will be allowed to have Hens on their property and the pilot project will officially start. We expect it to be completed by the first of November of 2019.”

Gibeau says that around 20 households were accepted for the project with all of them needing to complete a Hen Workshop to go over the different guidelines.

Some of those guidelines include following the Community Standards By Law when it comes to cleanliness and noise and that no eggs from the hens will be put up for sale.

Through the duration of the project, Gibeau says they will speak to others in the community as part of their evaluation process.

“One of the things we try to capture with the guidelines is to mitigate any concerns that neighbours may have, whether it’s smell or noise and so on. We’ll be contacting the neighbours to see if they’ve been impacted and how they’ve been impacted by the hens.”
