Humans aren't the only ones that are being affected by the warm weather.

With Airdrie and most of Alberta recently under heat warnings the last few days it's been hard to stay outside for extended periods of time not only for us but for our pets as well.

Erin Heck Owner of Happy Paws Veterinarian Clinic says the heat can be just as damaging for pets.

"Pets really get affected in two different ways, one being the burning of their paws on the hot pavement and the other being heat exhaustion."

Heck also says it's important to feel the concrete with your hand prior to walking your dog to make sure it's not going to harm your dog's paws.

Many owners tend to shave their dogs during the summer in hopes to keep their dog cooler but according to Heck, shaving your dog can give the opposite effect.

"Their fur and undercoat help them regulate their heat and prevent them from direct UV rays so they don't burn."

There are a few warning signs for heat exhaustion in your dog, they may be panting heavier than normal, drooling excessively, lightheadedness and dizziness or even seizures.

"If you think your dog has some warning signs of heat exhaustion bring them to a veterinarian clinic as soon as possible."
