The City of Airdrie and Fortis Alberta are getting ready to change their street lights.

The majority of Airdrie's street lamps will be changed to LED lights late this year.

"There's probably over 5000 street lights and I believe Fortis has identified 3200 that are eligible for conversion," says Ken Velcic with Airdrie's Engineering Department.

Velcic presented the amendments to the By-Law at last Monday's Council Meeting and now it needs final approval from Fortis Alberta.

The City believes that these changes will help reduce overall energy costs.

"Per light, they (Fortis) estimate it's around $5-6 per month savings. Now that doesn't sound like much but when you're talking about 5000 lights or in this case 3200 lights, it does add up pretty quick."
