Just before midnight on Friday evening (June 15), Cochrane RCMP, Rockyview Fire Services and EMS responded to a call in the Bearspaw area.

The call for help came in when an explosion occurred in a fire pit injuring three people. RCMP Corporal Troy Savinkoff, says at this point there are theories of a substance triggering the explosion but at this time the incident remains under investigation. "A group of individuals was getting together for a type of party and there was a fire they were attempting to light. Our investigation is looking into exactly what took place to cause the fire that injured the people for this event they were celebrating."

The three injured are all hockey players and the Western Hockey League (WHL) released a statement this morning (June 18) on the incident. "The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club and Western Hockey League are deeply saddened by the events involving two Hurricanes players – Jordy Bellerive and Ryan Vandervlis – and WHL Alumnus Matt Alfaro.

It was initially rumoured that the campfire occurred during a bachelor party but the WHL has shared that information is inaccurate. The campfire occurred at the family home of WHL Alumnus Tyler Wong the evening prior to a planned day of golf.

At this time, Alfaro and Bellerive are currently in stable condition and Vandervlis who is in critical condition has been placed in a medically-induced coma.

Vandervlis suffered severe burns to his body and is currently in an intensive-care unit in Calgary.

Tyler Wong's family shared that nine of Tyler's friends were at the house Friday night as they were planned to stay over before heading golfing and camping on Saturday. "We are earnestly praying for three of Tyler's closest friends – Ryan, Jordy and Matt – along with their families, for comfort and healing during this time of hurt."

No structures were involved in the fire and police are still investigating and interviewing party attendees.

Tyler Wong was named WHL Humanitarian three times over and received the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Humanitarian award on May 27 in Windsor, Ontario.
