You may have wondered if winter would ever end.  Well, so did the roads team at the City of Airdrie.

Team Leader Mike Avramenko said they usually start the street sweeping program on April 1st but the long, hard winter has pushed the date back a month. That means the program is officially set to start tomorrow (May 1).

"Watch for big orange signs at neighbourhood entrances and ensure your vehicle is moved off the street on the dates indicated on the sign," said Avramenko.

Residents should park their vehicles in their driveways or rear garage pad and remove driveway ramps if they have any.

The orange signs will be at neighbourhood main entrances but not on individual streets.  The city will once again be using a "tag and tow" program for vehicles left on the street when an area is scheduled for sweeping.  Last year, 330 cars that were impeding the sweeping equipment were towed.

Avramenko said their ultimate goal is to eliminate the tag and tow program because all residents are complying by moving their vehicles.

Street sweeping is important for both safety and for the environment, removing debris left over from the winter and preventing it from entering storm drains which keeps waterways cleaner.  It also cuts down on air pollution caused by dust and keeps roads safer by improving mobility and removing loose gravel.
