It won't be long now until the ice hits the roads, sending your car into a tailspin.

October is usually a busy month for drivers preparing their vehicles for winters and that includes finding the right tires.

According to Roads Team Lead for the City of Airdrie, Mike Avramenko, the time to decide is around now.

"I think anytime we get into mid-October, where the temperatures are starting to get into the minus side of the scale, it's probably a good time to start thinking about that."

Avramenko also squandered the common myth that Winter tires are more of a fad.

"Lots of people think it's a facility and nothing but a cash cow, but there's a lot of science behind winter tires."

Several communities in B.C and Quebec require Winter Tires by law in the effort to reduce driving injuries in the season.

Avramenko says that while the idea is a good one, it would be tough for Airdrie to execute.

"It's kind of a difficult proposal if Airdrie was to look at their own by-law for that. How do you keep all the guests and commercial vehicles that enter into the city that don't have winter tires."

Avramenko believes that any legislation on Winter tires is better handled on the Provincial level.
