Airdrie City Council is looking at the feasibility of covering the Chinook Winds Skate Park to allow use all year round.

Due to the pie shaped lot, a standard cover or structure would not work. The enclosure would have to be custom built which the city anticipates will add to the cost.

The roof structure will need to cover approximately 27,000 sq.ft. and will also need to include heating and lights.

A simple roof structure without walls would range from $1,500,000 to $2,000,000 for a custom design.

A Dynamic Air Shelter would have an initial cost of $400,000, but with the custom design the price could go up by as much as 75%.

In addition to the initial cost, the Air Shelter would be at risk of vandalism. To mitigate the risk, Chris Reason, Corporate Properties Project Manager said that the facility would need to be staffed during the day and have security at night.

After reviewing the initial proposal at the City Council meeting, a request has been made for further details on the cost breakdown.
