Carillion Canada will still be operating on some of Alberta's major highways, despite the bankruptcy of their parent company in Britain.

On Monday (January 15th), Carillion PLC filed for bankruptcy, therefore placing themselves into compulsory liquidation.

That came from a statement from Carillion Canada who says their operations will not be affected.

"Our Canadian leadership is currently assessing the situation and working with stakeholders to ensure continuity of operations," says spokesperson Cody Johnstone.

Carillion Canada is responsible for maintaining a large stretch of highways in Northeastern Alberta including the QE2 outside of Edmonton, Highway 63 and Highway 21, and they'll continue to do so.

"Carillion Canada is independent of the United Kingdom operation," says Alberta Transportation Spokesperson Wayne Wood. "They've indicated to us that it's certainly business as usual for all of the contracts they hold in Alberta and elsewhere. We're in day to day touch with them just to make sure that happens."

Earlier this week, the United Conservative Party called on the NDP to inform them of what would happen to the highways under Carillion's control. fearing that the UK Business collapse meant uncertainty for Carillion Canada.

As Wood says though, that's not the case, and they'll continue to work with Carillion to make sure they're still running on their highways.

"We are putting contingency plans in place in the event that Carillion indicates that they can't continue. We're not anticipating that that's going to happen. Drivers in Alberta can rest assured that their highways will be maintained, no matter who's maintaining them."
