Mackenzie Murphy of Airdrie did not expect her day to end up the way it did.

After heavy snowfall in much of Southern Alberta today (October 2nd), Murphy found herself at a complete traffic stop on Highway 1 just outside of Canmore.

Murphy, along with hundreds of other drivers, has been at a standstill for most of the afternoon.

"We’ve been here for about five hours now— arrived around noon. We headed out from Airdrie at 6:45am to head to Banff for my boyfriend, Josh's post ACL surgery appointment. On our way back to Airdrie this morning we hit the long line of traffic and been there ever since!"

That's when one of the stranded drivers decided to make the best of the snowy situation.

Jens Lindemann, the head of Brass Studies at UCLA and trumpet soloist in the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, did what he does best and began playing his trumpet for his fellow drivers. Stranded drivers got to enjoy Lindemann's rendition of  'Oh, Canada!'

"I've never experienced anything like this where we were caught in the middle of a snowstorm for five hours with nothing to do but to play the trumpet," says Lindemann. "I'm calling this the official SnowBowl Concert."

Despite the frustration of being at a complete standstill for over five hours, Lindemann, Murphy, and other drivers are trying to turn this situation into a positive one.

"What ends up happening is people step out of their cars, they go for a stretch and end up talking to each other and you know... Canadians are hearty folks. We're making the best of it!"

The Southern Alberta region has shattered record snowfall amounts today.
