On Thursday (February 16), Nose Creek Elementary School handed out their annual Lamplighter Awards.

Principle John Murphy explained that the awards have been handed out every year since the school opened, and are meant to recognize students of character at the school that leave a positive impact. Kids at the school nominate a fellow student for the award, and every classroom recognizes someone as a Lamplighter.

The school also recognizes an adult as an honourary Lamplighter. This year, the award went to Ward 3 Trustee Sylvia Eggerer.

"Sylvia has been a long time educator, a long time trustee, and she has worked with the public, worked with the parents, worked with the staff, and worked with obviously the kids, to make not only Nose Creek and Rocky View but I guess our community at large a much better place," explained Murphy.

Murphy says it is important to include adults in the awards, because it reinforces to the students what a positive person looks like.

"When you have children that are ranging from ages five to ten, a lot of times we can tell them things but we also need to be their role models, and the people that we have for Lamp Lighter awards, in the adults, are role models.

Trustee Eggerer said, although the awards are about the students and not her, it still did feel good to have her contribution and hard work recognized.

"Anyone who is in the education business seems to be there because they're out for the kids and they want what's best for the children. So yeah, it makes me feel good. Yes, very good."
