Alberta's conservative parties have finally agreed to unify.

Wildrose Leader Brian Jean and PC Leader Jason Kenney signed the agreement this afternoon (May 18th) taking the first steps to form the United Conservative Party (UCP).

Although there is still much work left to do in forming a United Party, Jean says they're ready for it.

"It's worth it. This is about the future of Alberta and generations of good government. It means that we'll have a great economy and great quality of life. It's all about working for the people, not working for ourselves...we're prepared to do that."

Both Kenney and Jean made it clear that the decision to join forces is to better represent all of Alberta. Kenney took it a step further to say it's the only way to beat the NDP in the next election.

"I truly believe that if we vote split our way into a second NDP term, they will change the political culture of this Province. They will inflict lasting damage on it's economy in ways that are difficult if not impossible to reverse. This is a risk that we cannot take."

The agreement will still need to be ratified before a leadership convention can take place, which both Jean and Kenney say they will run in.
