The Airdrie Food Bank will see some changes in their operation after updates were announced to the Canada Food Guide today (January 22).

These updates to the Canada Food Guide include steering away from the traditional four food groups and consuming more fruits and vegetables. The guide also suggests eating more plant-based proteins instead of traditional proteins like eggs, meats, and fish.

We caught up with the Airdrie Food Bank to see how this new change is impacting how they operate. Christine Taylor with the Airdrie Food Bank shares some insight on what is on their horizon.

"We currently at the food bank have made the move to provide more fresh food in our hampers and that's been a priority for us, so we are in line with some of the new guidelines right now."

The Airdrie Food Bank will be seeing some changes to the items they currently distribute now that there are new guidelines in place.

"A little less dairy, it will depend on what we decide to do," says Taylor. "We currently do offer quite a bit of meat in our hampers and dairy products, so it'll definitely have to be something we look at and decide as a food bank and nationally."

To help address concerns and potential changes that Canadian food banks will be implementing, the Food Banks Canada National Conference 2019 will be taking place in June. There, the new Canada Food Guide will be discussed in depth, as well as how food banks in Canada will respond according to the guide.
