A new project has been launched in Airdrie to help support local youth and their mental health.

Director of Closer To Home, Arlene Oostenbrink explains why they launched the new 'Viewpoints' program.

"We've come to know the Airdrie community quite well and know that there is a need for more support and resources for Airdrie youth around accessing information and learning skills that would help them really build their sense of mental health and well being."

Closer to Home has been offering services in the community since 1998 when they opened a group home with the help of Children's Services Funding.

The Viewpoints program will be offering many services for youth ages 14-24 throughout the summer including various youth groups, and hope to continue that outreach as they work with local schools this fall.

They're also in talks to develop a youth drop in centre, and are searching for a potential site.

Oostenbrink says they want to make their services readily available to all youth.

"We're making sure that we're visible, available in places where youth would want to access groups, meeting places, activities, chances to learn more about the resources."

The project is funded primarily by the City of Airdrie's Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Government of Alberta.
