In only a few days, Airdrie will join communities across the country to recognize the people that work tirelessly to make our community a better place through National Volunteer Week, starting on Sunday, April 23.

"National Volunteer Week was put into place in order to have a week where we recognize volunteers in our community all across the country," said Melanie Taylor, Executive Director for Volunteer Airdrie. "We could almost say International Volunteer Week, as many other countries do the same thing at the same time."

Whether it's helping a neighbour or spending time at the food bank, Taylor said volunteerism is a cornerstone of our city.

"We wouldn't have the communities we have without the volunteers we have. Many of the ways that we support each other here in Airdrie is through volunteerism."

Taylor said that along with the importance of volunteering, it's important to recognize the people that devote their time to making the community a better place.

"I think recognition's important, because who doesn't want to be thanked for something. That recognition comes in so many forms, and everybody wants to be recognized a little differently."

Volunteer Airdrie will host their annual red carpet event at the Roxy Theatre on Saturday (April 22), as well as a new surprise recognition, which will be unveiled the same day.
