As National Volunteer Week comes to a close today (April 29), one member of Volunteer Airdrie is reflecting on the importance of volunteers in the community.

Carmen Vetian is a member of the Volunteer Airdrie board and the group's treasurer and has been on the board since January, 2010.  Vetian thinks its important to make an impact in the community.  "The more people that volunteer, you know, involving youth and children and everything too, it just changes the community and it bonds the community together."

Vetian says being a member of the board for Volunteer Airdrie gives her a lot of satisfaction.  "I've gotten a sense of fulfillment, I've gotten a better understanding of the community and a lot of the individuals and other volunteers that donate so much of their time that make it such a wonderful place to live."

Speaking at last week's Red Carpet recognition event at the Roxy Theatre for National Volunteer Week, Vetian explained how her position as a board member gives her double the feeling of fulfillment.  "You're volunteering as a board member, you're providing valuable information and knowledge in terms of professional knowledge and background but also being able to participate in events like this."

Volunteer Week is an important one to recognize the work of volunteers says Vetian.  "It's just nice to see that they're being recognized.  Volunteering isn't a paid position, it's something people do out of the goodness of their hearts, donating their time and resources to very important areas of the community."

Although today is the end of National Volunteer Week, some very important volunteers will be recognized again at the Volunteer of the Year gala that goes May 4th at the Bert Church Theatre in Airdrie.
