At yesterday's (March 30) Rocky View School Board meeting, the board of trustees voted on the attendance area and transportation service area for Prince of Peace school.

Until recently, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Calgary provided busing to the school, which is located west of Calgary. The church had provided busing for a number of years, but can no longer afford to do so. As the school is a Rocky View school, the board held a vote to assume transportation to and from the school by the School Board.

The attendance area for the school was established as the City of Chestermere and surrounding area, as well as the hamlet of Langdon. The transportation service area includes that attendance area, as well as a small portion of Northeast Calgary. The proposed plan was to simply take over transportation from the church, without adding to or removing from their transportation area. That would start in May, so that transportation could be all set up before new schools in the division open next year, allowing the division to focus attention on transportation to the new schools.

Some concerns were raised about the cost of busing students from Calgary, as well as the appropriateness of having Rocky View transportation making stops outside of the school division.

Ultimeately, the board went to a recorded vote, with the motion passing 5-2. Trustees Slyvia Eggerer and Helen Clease stood opposed.

A second motion was put on the floor, asking the division's Transportation Committee to prepare a report on transportation exceptions in Rocky View, including costs and possibilities for future creative transportation solutions. That motion carried unanimously.
