The City of Airdrie is launching their waste reduction week.

During this week the City hopes to educate residents on what items can be put in the green bins to be composted.

Leanne Moreira, Education Coordinator with the City's Waste and Recycling department says its an international event.

"Waste reduction week is a national campaign that focuses on resource efficiency and waste reduction and helps us celebrate our environmental efforts and achievements and encourage new innovative ideas."

This weeks theme is going to be on food waste reduction.

"What we at the waste and recycling services have decided to focus on food waste reduction, over the next week will be posting tips and tricks on how to reduce food waste at home."

The City currently has a green cart program that accepts yard and food waste as well as a blue cart program that accepts all recyclables like cardboard, tin and glass products.
