As the winter months approach, drivers are encouraged to beware of animals on the move.

Environment and Parks declared Wildlife Vehicle Collision Awareness Week on Thursday, November 17.

"We are trying to make people better aware of the fact that during the fall period we have a number of wildlife that are on the move, no question they are crossing our highways," said Norman Brownlee, Alberta Environment and Parks.

In Alberta, 48 per cent of all rural collisions involve wildlife, and 4 per cent of those are fatal.

Between 2010 and 2014, there were a total of 540 vehicle accidents involving wildlife around Airdrie. Of those, 29 resulted in injuries, but no fatalities.

"When we are driving certainly scanning the sides of the road for that movement there, whether that be a deer, an elk or a moose." said Brownlee.
