The whole idea of this week's weeknight Check Stop, conducted by the Airdrie RCMP, was to maintain an increased presence on the streets and highways around the city and bring awareness to the ongoing issue of impaired driving during National Impaired Driving Prevention Week from March 18th - 24th.

The Check Stop, which took place during the early morning hours of March 21st on Highway #2 northbound at the Yankee Valley Boulevard exit, did catch one impaired driver who was arrested and charged resulting in a three-day vehicle seizure, but it also yielded some other interesting results.

The operation only lasted a couple of hours, using a limited number of General Duty officers but in that time it proved to be successful in nabbing a number of people, for various crimes.

One person was ticketed for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Another female was arrested for having two outstanding warrants.

A possession of stolen property and a Controlled Drug and Substances Act investigation was started and resulted in a vehicle seizure, recovery of stolen identification and the seizure of marijuana.

Another male was charged with possession of a controlled substance and also ended up being charged with obstruction of a Peace Officer, driving without a license, and having open liquor in his vehicle.

National Impaired Driving Prevention Week is an effort to make streets and highways safer and to let people know that driving impaired, whether by drugs or alcohol, will lead to criminal charges.
