The City held an open house last night to debrief the public on the plan for the roughly 12,000 acres that were annexed from Rocky View County back in 2012.

The plan is looking at the 12,640 acres of land that was part of the annexation. The annexation was meant to give the city a 50-year land supply for the cities rapid growth. Since the 2012 annexation there has been a number of documents and studies that the city has put into place to form the foundation of the project such as the municipal development plan that was passed in 2014, Transportation master plan in 2015, as well as the updated growth projections plan that was passed in 2016, and now the 12,000 acre plan will combine all of the previous plans together to give more background information on the project.

Airdrie City Planner, William Czaban said he expects the plan to help give some direction as to what the land will be used for.

"This plan is going to set future planning cells within that annexed area, so what areas will be up next to do that more detailed community structure plan and determine the sequencing for when new development areas come online and provide some general direction on that planning on what sort of land use we can expect on that annexed area".

The land is located all around the city of Airdrie, to put the size of this plan into perspective the City of Airdrie before the annexation was roughly 8,000 acres, so this more than doubles the cities land base. Even though Airdrie has gathered this annexation the city may not use parts of it.

"Of those twelve thousand acres, not all of that will be slated for development. There are some areas that are environmental corridors or areas that are not even needed within the 50-year plan horizon."

The land use plan so far has been broken down into 6.000 acres of residential, 3000 acres of industrial and about 1,000 acres of commercial land.
