After such a wild and inconsistent winter and early spring, many residents are wondering when the city will begin their street cleaning process.

According to Mike Avremenko from the cities roads department, the plan is to begin the street sweeping May 1st.

"Historically we start on the first of April but due to the unusual winter we have had this year we are postponing it to may 1st."

The city is still operating their four 24 hour snow crews who are trying to clear pesky areas throughout the city where snow has accumulated in shaded areas. The city has set aside roughly 150,000 dollars for street sweeping.

Avremenko asks the public to be patient as they can only do so much with the obscure weather we have been having and said that residents of Airdrie will be well aware of when street sweeping starts.

"We will be putting out electronic message boards. There will be one posted on veterans and on Yankee, once we get into the residential communities we have the big orange signs at all the entrances."

Once the city has collected and cleaned the gravel and sand off the roads it gets shipped to a landfill in Calgary to be properly cleaned as it is labelled as a contaminated material.

Airdrie spends roughly fifty dollars per ton of gravel that needs cleaning, however, this year the cost per ton will rise to 165 dollars due to the carbon tax according to Avremenko.
