Heavy snow across the province is making roads a mess and they're not expected to get much better in the near future.

Airdrie RCMP say they're responding to numerous weather-related collisions on Highway 2 between Veterans Boulevard and the Calgary city limits.

Southbound traffic has been reduced to a single lane while northbound traffic is experiencing significant delays.

The RCMP say to avoid all non-essential travel and, if you must travel, consider an alternate route, slow down, and drive to the conditions.

The rest of the province is under similar circumstances to the Airdrie area.  A snowfall warning is in effect in southern Alberta while further north, in the Edmonton region, a winter storm warning has been issued.

Earlier this morning, Cochrane RCMP said Highway One west of Calgary near the Old Banff Coach Road had numerous vehicles in the ditch and they had responded to multiple collisions.

The eastbound lanes of the highway were reported to be nearly impassable.  Since then, the road has been cleared and plowed and traffic is moving again but conditions are not good.

Alberta Transportation also recommends that you delay any non-essential travel until conditions improve, which should be later in the weekend.

You should also check with 511 Alberta for the latest road conditions.  At present, it shows that most highways in the province are snow covered and icy.
