Multiple Airdrie schools are participating in Rocky View School's fourth annual Helping Hands Cleanup this school week with Earth Day being on Monday.

Staff and students in numerous schools throughout the division will dedicate time to maintaining the beauty of their school grounds by collecting garbage from playground areas.

Since the first Helping Hands Cleanup in 2021, this event has grown into an annual community-builder where classes come together to show school spirit and take pride in their school grounds while observing Earth Day and its message of environmental stewardship,” said the Superintendent of Schools, Greg Luterbach.

Here is a list of a few Airdrie schools participating in Helping Hands Cleanup:

  • A.E. Bowers Elementary School
  • Cooper’s Crossing School
  • École Airdrie Middle School
  • École Edwards Elementary School
  • Heloise Lorimer School
  • Meadowbrook Middle School
  • Northcott Prairie School
  • Nose Creek Elementary School
  • Ralph McCall School
  • W.H. Croxford High School

Ashley Wigemyr a Grade 4/5 teacher at A.E. Bowers Elementary School talked about why her students were out cleaning up their playground.

"We want to keep our earth clean, but also is curriculum related. We talk about how trash and recyclables can harm our environment and our wildlife so this is a good way to clean up and protect our environment."

All the different grades at the school are taking turns going out and cleaning up their playground.

"Although we are only doing it around our playground, it is important to go out and clean up our community like Nose Creek Park."

To entice the kids to clean up and pick up garbage, the Operations team members of RVS will provide food prizes to classes that discover the most valuable item, the oddest item, and the largest item and display the greatest school spirit.
