As high school basketball teams played their final games of 2017 before heading into the holidays, Airdrie teams struggled in their matchups last night (December 19).

Croxford Cavaliers at Chestermere Lakers

The Croxford Cavaliers girls squads ended the calendar year on the road in Chestermere to face the Lakers.

The senior Cavs saw their undefeated streak come to an end in a way they would have liked to avoid, losing to the Lakers 92-12

Coach Aaron Nisbett said the team was understandably unhappy with the result.

"Obviously we're disappointed with the results from the game, nobody likes to be blown out. That said, it does help to show us what it is we need to work on if we want to keep being a competitive force."

Despite the blow out, Nisbett said he was happy with the team's offensive decisions, and highlighted Jasmine Ortega and Summer Schroeder's post play.

With the loss, the Cavaliers sit at a 2-1 record heading into the break.

The junior Cavs were the only Airdrie team to win last night, continuing their dominance with a 44-28 road win against the Lakers. With the win, the Cavs improve to 3-0, staying tied with the Cochrane Cobras for first in the division.

After the break, the Cavaliers will get back into action at home against the Bow Valley Bobcats.

Bow Valley Bobcats at Bert Church Chargers

Home court did not work to the advantage of the junior girls Bert Church Chargers.

The chargers fell deeper into the hole on their own court against the Bow Valley Bobcats, losing 69-26. The Chargers remain winless going into the holidays with a 0-3 record.

A matchup between the senior girls Chargers and Bobcats was postponed.

The Chargers will start the new year against long time rivals George McDougall on January 9.

St. Martin de Porres Kodiaks at Robert Thirsk Comets

The St. Martin de Porres Kodiaks were the only Airdrie boys team in action last night, taking on the Robert Thirsk Comets in the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association.

The Kodiaks have played their first three games on the road, and they have struggled. Last night saw another loss, as the Kodiaks fell 95-43 to the Comets.

Despite the loss, coach Curtis Senkow felt the team competed for the full game.

"They are a big, strong team and we held our own for the first two quarters but then our conditioning came into effect for the second half. We made mental errors resulting in turnovers and easy points for them."

Marco Pagas stayed on the floor for the full game, and Senkow also highlighted the great shooting of Kim Paala and Joel Akhile.

After the loss, the Kodiaks remain in last place in their division with a 0-3 record.

The Kodiaks will play their first home game of the season on January 9 against the St. Gabriel Guardians.
