UPDATE:

If you were thinking of taking in one of two free drive-in movies scheduled for tomorrow night (June 4) in the parking lots at Genesis Place, unless you already have a pass, you'll have to find something else to entertain your family.

Genesis Land Development, the company putting on the shows in Airdrie tomorrow night says both the showing of Raya and the Last Dragon at 7:00 pm and Jumanji: The Next Level running at 10:00 pm have reached capacity and are running a waitlist.

The company said earlier that the two showings were sold out but that they were working on finding more space.  That search proved fruitless.

There is some good news from the sold-out venues.  The $20 per vehicle proceeds were all destined for the Airdrie Food Bank and Genesis says more than $3,000 was raised.  The better news, the company plans to match that amount so the Food Bank is benefitting from a donation of $6,000.

Genesis Land Development is putting the shows on as a way to help Airdronians get over the difficult winter of COVID-19 and in celebration of National Drive-in Movie Day on Sunday.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Rather than being a company that puts up houses and moves on, Genesis believes in giving back to those communities and is doing it again Friday night (June 4).

Arnie Stefaniuk, Vice-president of Land Development said they'll host a pair of drive-in movies for families at Genesis Place in Airdrie.

"June 6 is actually National Drive-in Day so it kind of gave us the idea of hey, why don't we put up some drive-in movies for our residents out in Airdrie.  So in conjunction with Genesis Place, we've been able to find suitable parking areas to host the movies."

Followers of Genisis' Instagram page chose both family-friendly movies.  "Raya and the Last Dragon" will be shown at 7:00 pm and "Jumanji: The Next Level" is set for 10:00 pm.

"This is a safe event," Stefaniuk said.  "We are asking everybody to stay in your cars but there will be washrooms provided on-site so please bring your own snacks and beverages to both events. It's a safe, fun thing to do and after being in COVID lockdown for 14, 15 months this gives families something to look forward to, gets them out of their house and gets them off of their couch and I think it's a fun and a family bonding adventure waiting for them."

Two of Genesis' builder partners, McKee Homes and Genesis Builder's Group along with Genesis Place will help put the drive-ins on.  Tickets are $20 per car with all proceeds being handed over to the Airdrie Food Bank.

"The Food Bank is what I call a very organic charity because if you bring in a box of mac and cheese, the whole box goes to some person, it doesn't get split up, it goes to some person who needs it," said Stefaniuk. "With COVID the Food Bank couldn't do their annual food drive campaigns so we just thought that this was a way we could help them out a little bit."

Moviegoers are also encouraged to bring some non-perishable food to the show as donation boxes will also be set up.

Unfortunately, Stefaniuk said, the popularity of the idea has led to shows already sold out but he said there is a chance you still might be able to attend.

"Currently we are looking for another parking lot in Airdrie at Genesis Place to see if we can find additional parking spaces so please check our WEBSITE and see if there are any updates before the movies start next Friday."
