Five local bowling athletes showed what they were made of at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary. The games were held in Calgary from February 27 until March 2.

More than 4,000 attendees, including athletes, coaches, officials, and mission staff, along with their families and friends gathered in the city south of Airdrie for eight different sports.

Airdrie had a total of five athletes partaking in the games as a bowling team, these are the five athletes (last names are withheld for confidentiality reasons):

  • Brendan
  • Christian
  • Luke
  • Jayden
  • Evan

"Together as a team, we finished fifth; two athletes won medals in their divisions for individual competitions. Brendan got gold in his division while Jayden got bronze," stated the coach of the team Sandra Foreman.

According to Foreman, there was a lot of disappointment from the team when they did not win as a group but they got through it and cheered in the winners.

"They (Airdrie's athletes) were so excited for the whole event. It was an experience they won't forget anytime soon."

Foreman wanted to thank everybody who came out to cheer them on as it helped a lot.

The team held various training camps throughout last year and this year to practice their skills so they would be prepared to give it their all.

While not participating in any sports, members of Special Olympics Airdrie, Emma, Chelsea, Bailey, Ava and Will have been named to the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Cheer Team.

Before the games began, George McDougall High School and Bert Church High School played host to the Canada Games torch run.
