Airdrie Stars Athletic Association is adding a new team for the next hockey season.

It will be a U16 Prep Team for athletes born in 2008-2009.

Jonah Cimolini, President of the Airdrie Stars Athletic Association is excited to bring a new team to Airdrie as there are not that many teams in Airdrie with this age group.

"With a lot of interest from some of our players, we decided to start a team with this new age group in the Premier Hockey League."

Cimolini went on to explain exactly what the Stars organization hopes to help with when it comes to these young athletes.

"It's for kids that are aspiring to make those AAA teams, but need more development and a bit more time to get there."

The team will be assembled in September for next winter.

"It's an alternative to minor hockey. It's more of a development-based model."

Depending on if all Airdrie Stars hockey teams are assembled this season they could have 8-9 teams all the way from U7-U18.

For the team, they have a couple of ID skates already scheduled, one being today at the Ron Ebbesen Arena, 7-8 p.m., and Another ID skate on June 21, 8:15-9:15 p.m. also at the Ron Ebbesen Arena.

Cimolini finished off by saying they will be having more ID skates throughout the summer.
