This week is National Volunteer Week (April 14-20) and many local not-for-profits are thanking their volunteers for everything they do.

The Airdrie Food Bank highlighted what volunteers do to help out local families in need and help out the food bank:

  • 3252 breakfasts through RJ. Hawkey breakfast program.
  • 9560 school lunches made by volunteers.
  • 18,079  individual snacks to schools.
  • 70 food pick-ups per week.
  • 4570 hampers made.
  • 18,134 volunteer hours which is equal to around 9 full-time staff members.

"We are incredibly lucky to have such a wide and diverse volunteer group that works with us. We couldn't do what we did without them," stated Abigail Bergin, the Volunteer Manager for the Airdrie Food Bank.

Bergin couldn't thank the local volunteers and how much they do each week to make our community a better place.

"They dedicate their time and they are selfless in what they do. They come in with smiles and are always happy and ready to help us in any way that they can. They're a big part of our community and that commitment to serve the organization and the wider community is exponential."

The Food Bank still serves around 600 families per week.

On Sunday, Volunteer Airdrie is hosting an event to celebrate those who spend time helping others.

The event will take place at Bert Church Theatre from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Doors open at 11:00 a.m.

Before and after the event, there will be casual entertainment, snacks, and a cash bar available. Door prizes will also be available. Alongside violinist Talia Beckie, country rock musician and songwriter, Steve Jevne, will be performing.

David Maffitt, Chair of the Volunteer Airdrie Society talked about the importance of volunteers.
