Several new cannabis retailers have received approval from Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis to open their doors.

Plantlife became the first store to open its doors in Airdrie a couple of weeks ago and RARE Cannabis Co. opened July 26th.

Four other retailers, including two NewLeaf Cannabis stores, Best Buds Outlet and Airdrie Strain Lane have also received their licenses and are in the process of opening.

Marijuana was legalized on October 17, 2018. Legalization led to high demand from consumers, causing supply shortages across Alberta.

Shortages forced the AGLC to implement a six-month moratorium on new cannabis shops in the province, but that was lifted on May 30th.

The opening of the local stores means residents in Airdrie and surrounding communities looking to purchase medicinal or recreational cannabis no longer need to travel to other centres like Calgary to do so.

The Town of Cochrane also saw its first cannabis retailer open up shop on Monday, July 29. The Plantlife store is the only retail location currently licensed with the AGLC to sell marijuana in the town.
