Carstairs athlete, 14-year-old Damon McEvoy enjoyed his time at the RBC Training Ground Finals located in Toronto in early December.

McEvoy competed in an RBC Training Ground event in March last year and caught the eye of scouts from Luge Canada. He was named as a finalist and top 100 of the 2,200 athletes that attended those events across Canada.

Thirty athletes from the final earned funding, a spot on Team Canada with one of twelve partner national sports organizations, and an accelerated path to the Olympics. Unfortunately, McEvoy did not finish in the top 30, but he is very grateful for the experience.

"It was a little bit nerve-wracking. There were some full-grown men and women there. But honestly very exciting knowing that I was one of the youngest kids there and I just enjoyed that. It was so fun and getting to know new people."

McEvoy was very excited about his trip out to Toronto.

"I got to go on a plane ride there and back, got bussed to see some different place and I got to go into this giant gym to do all kinds fitness testing."

Some of the different activities he participated in were sprinting, strength testing and endurance. Although he did not make the top 30, McEvoy stated he will be back this year at the RBC Training Ground events.

"I will be going back to Mount Royal to do the fitness testing to hopefully be invited back to make Top 100 again."

Only 14 years old, McEvoy can keep going back to these events until he is 25 to try and make Team Canada and he plans on doing just that.

"It'll be super exciting to train with other great athletes and compete against them."
