Carstairs resident, Kyle Lucas (Pool C) placed second in the 2023 Stampede's Tie Down Roping competition. Lucas and Beau Cooper (Stettler)  were the only two Albertans in the final competition on Sunday, July 16.

Tie-down roping consists of the cowboys and their horses trying to rope and tye an animal as fast as they can.

"Speed, skill, and finesse are key in this event. The cowboy waits on horseback behind a rope barrier. When he gives a nod, the calf is released and gets a 10 [foot]. head start. The cowboy must quickly rope the calf, dismount on the run to reach it, turn it on its side and tie three of its legs. Time is called when the cowboy throws his hands in the air, and the calf is immediately released," The Calgary Stampede stated.

Lucas who was in Pool C, performed first on Thursday, 13 July, placing fifth. During his second performance on Friday, he placed first in the competition and in his pool and then placed sixth on Saturday, though maintained a fourth position in the pool standings. Blane Cox from Stephenville, Texas placed first in the July 16 final.

Lucas is one of a handful of local residents who won competitions at the Stampede. Milton Scott, who lives just east of Airdrie, won first place in the  2023 World Stock Dog Championships.

The 2023 Calgary Stampede's attendance for this year - over 1.3 million visitors is on record for having the second-highest attendance in the event's history.
