Alberta Parks officials have said that a popular backcountry trail near Bragg Creek has been fully closed till at least May due to, ' current environmental conditions and the likelihood of damage if the trail is used at the present time.'

The closure is impacting Prairie Mountain Trail in Kananaskis Country, as well as the Elbow Falls Provincial Recreation Area.

"Newly constructed trails are particularly prone to damage in wet conditions. With continued use in dry conditions the trail will be packed down and hardened, becoming sustainable in all seasons," Alberta Parks stated on its website.

Parks officials added that the trail will be monitored in the coming weeks and re-opened when the trail is dry enough to sustain regular use without damage.

"At this time of year, trails in the mountains and foothills are experiencing spring conditions – which range from snow-covered to wet and muddy. Using wet trails can cause erosion and damage to the trail and surrounding area. Plan your spring adventures on dry trails with a hardened tread."

Powderface Creek Trail, Elbow Valley Trail, Prairie Creek Trail and Pistolero Trail remain open.
