On the afternoon of March 7, Premier Jason Kenney announced some changes to help relieve Albertans from gas prices that only seem to be getting higher.

“I am announcing a bold decision that will give real relief to Albertans struggling to keep up with increasing costs. Alberta will end the collection of the Provincial Fuel Tax. This means the price at the pump will drop by 13 cents a litre, putting money back into the pockets of Albertans.”

The Federal Carbon Tax rate on gasoline is set to increase again on April 1, from just under nine cents per litre to just over 11 cents per litre.

“We’ve heard Albertans’ concerns about the rising cost of living loud and clear. While the federal government is set to increase the carbon tax April 1, Alberta’s government is taking the opposite approach and stepping up to offer relief.”

Kenney says these changes will apply to gasoline and diesel including marked fuel as of April 1.

“This relief is based on a sliding scale for oil prices. When the price of oil is over $90, that's West Texas Intermediate (WTI) per barrel. The fuel tax will be removed completely. When the price of oil is less than $80 per barrel of WTI. The fuel tax of 13 cents per litre will be in full effect.”

Kenney also mentioned that Alberta's government has been urging the Trudeau Liberals to listen to Canadian's concerns and address rising inflation. Kenney says, instead, Ottawa is doing just the opposite.

“I really don't understand how Justin Trudeau and Rachel Notley can possibly think that now's the right time to add even more costs to day-to-day living with their punishing carbon tax.”
