You may have noticed some signs in the city asking for interested participants to play the sport of Netball.

The sport is similar to basketball but played primarily by women in Commonwealth nations.

Australia and New Zealand have dominated the sport in the last century, winning the World Cup of Netball every time since 1963.*

Corey Skrypnek with Netball Alberta says right now there's no leagues in Airdrie, but they are reaching out to prospective players in the area.

"There's a large ex-pat community in those areas coming from England or Australia or New Zealand, which are huge Netball nations. We'd definitely like to draw on that population."

Skrypnek says that so far one Airdrie player has registered for their North Calgary league, and hopes the word will continue to spread.

When it comes to the question of why play the sport, Skrypnek believes Netball has many benefits and builds many skills.

"It really is good at teaching you space on a court, teaching you how to make sure you're not all clumping up in one place and that you're taking up the court and using it wisely. It's also very team oriented because everyone has to work together."

More information on Netball in Alberta can be found on their official website.
