Cochrane RCMP is asking the public to come forward in relation to a fraudster who was charged in 2020. Mounties believe there may be more victims who fell prey to the scam.

50-year-old Scott Phillip Brooks, a Calgary resident was investigated and charged in 2020 with over two dozen different offences after several individuals informed police of the loss of more than a million dollars over the course of a number of years. Police are warning that if something sounds too good to be true - it probably is.

"Have you been approached by someone you know and trust or introduced to a third party by someone you know or trust through a club, a team or a place of worship about a time-sensitive high-yield investment opportunity? The promise of the return on initial investment plus interest and a substantial bonus involving the sale of real property such as motor vehicles, used pipe, or intellectual property such as a pending patent … sounds great!  If it sounds to good to be true it might be a fraud," police warned.

Residents are urged to be cautious and research before they part with your money.

"Individuals who commit these types of fraud have put a significant amount of effort into developing background stories and false documents to legitimize their story," police added.

Brooks was charged with 17 counts of Fraud, four counts of Identity Fraud, one count of Laundering Proceeds of Crime, Fraudulent Registration of Title, two counts of  Misleading Receipt, as well as Disposal of Property to Defraud Creditors.
