A recent pulse survey by the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) shows Alberta teachers are dealing with more and more aggression in schools.

According to the results, 52 per cent of teachers experience violence or bullying. Ninety-five per cent of aggression occurs in person at school. The December study also revealed an increase in instances of intimidation, rumour-spreading, and offensive or vulgar gestures.

According to the ATA news release, many survey respondents said the consequences for aggressive behaviour are insufficient and felt the school system and leaders often failed to act against aggression by parents or students, leaving teachers unsupported.

71 per cent of educators also reported witnessing students make diminishing or hateful remarks to classmates whose opinions differ from their own, often leading to confrontations that happen outside of the classroom.

“The safety of all Alberta teachers and students must be prioritized by government. Our schools need to be a place where optimal learning environments are fully funded while ensuring safety, respect and support,” stated ATA president Jason Schilling.

Rocky View Schools provided a statement in regard to the recent survey and its results.

"Rocky View Schools is committed to offering safe and positive environments. In support of this, our students must follow RVS’ Student Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct sets out our expectations of students’ behaviour, outlines examples of behaviours that are prohibited and describes what is considered in reviewing student behaviour and some of the possible consequences of unacceptable behaviour," read the statement.

"Each student and situation is unique and our response and the supports offered are based on meeting the needs of the student(s) involved. We work closely with parents, teachers, learning support teachers, and school administration and depending on the needs of our students, may also include specialists hired by the division as well as outside agency specialists in the development of an individualized student plan. Plans are developed to support the individual student’s needs and the safety and well-being of all students and staff.

"Ongoing communication between the school and families is essential and we strongly encourage all students and parents/guardians to bring any concerns they have to their teacher or administrator as they happen," RVS stated.

The ATA supports the professional practice of educators, advances public education, and acts as an advocate for its 46,000 members.
