Santa will be travelling along Main Street at 5 p.m. on December 2 to see who has been naughty and nice.

The procession will serve as the official start to the Christmas season in Airdrie, according to Sam Morros, a volunteer organizer with Airdrie Parades,

"The Santa Claus parade is what we call the official kickoff to Christmas season in Airdrie and it is a parade that runs down Main Street on the 1st Saturday of December every year. Of course, with the grand finale being Santa Claus."

Registration for business will begin after the Thanksgiving long weekend and Morros says the theme brings out the holiday spirit,

"We have local businesses and community groups that put floats together to bring in the holidays. It's a really great way to kick everything off and celebrate and then the theme we kind of go for, we really encourage light up the night. So you can expect lots of Christmas lights, music and dancing.

When asked what her favourite part of the Santa Claus parade is Morros said,

"Well, I got to lead up Santa Claus last year and so I got kind of a bird's eye view on all of the little faces when they saw Santa for the first time. And so that's definitely my favourite part. "

If you are planning to head down to the event, plan parking arrangements since Main Street between Centre Avenue and Ridge Gate Drive closes at 4:30 p.m.

The parade has previously coincided with the CP Holiday train, and with a new event like the anticipated Light Up for the Festival of Lights coming to Airdrie this year, it might be quite an interesting evening, but as of right now, only the procession has been announced, according to Morros.

"Now the fun really starts. So I guess we can just expect announcements to come in the next few months as we really start to buckle down."

The Airdrie Parades Committee organizes all of the city's major parade events; the staff of five plans the main shows for this event, Canada Day, and organizes birthday parades and frontline worker thank you parades during Covid 19.
