If you’ve been by Genesis Place in recent weeks you’ve likely noticed a large structure being built.

It’s actually a solar carport and will tie into the rooftop solar system already up and running on top of the recreation centre.

In April of 2019, City Council approved the expansion project which will add an additional 240 solar modules on top of a double-wing carport in the West facing parking lot.

The carport will be a very visible part of the solar project while providing covered parking and generating additional electricity for Genesis Place.

The existing rooftop solar project is the largest municipal rooftop solar system in Canada. It’s believed it will reduce the overall electricity costs for the facility by $80,000 annually and reduce emissions by 1,000 tonnes in the first year.
